Why is the opener on a Wednesday this year?
An antitrust provision in the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 blocks the NFL from scheduling games on Friday or Saturday between mid-September and mid-December. To fit in the league’s first-ever Friday international game (49ers-Rams in Australia), the 2026 opener moved to Wednesday instead of the usual Thursday.
If your local game is blacked out
Local market blackout rules still apply to over-the-air broadcasts in some cases, particularly for teams with weaker ticket sales.
