An antitrust provision in the Sports Broadcasting Act of 1961 blocks the NFL from scheduling games on Friday or Saturday between mid-September and mid-December. To fit in the league’s first-ever Friday international game (49ers-Rams in Australia), the 2026 opener moved to Wednesday instead of the usual Thursday.
